Over the past 14 years the Board of Directors at St.Mildred’s has been implementing a master plan for the expansion and renewal of the school building. The final phase, undertaken by our office, involved both renovation and addition. The new addition includes ELC classrooms, a Dining Hall including a Servery and Commercial Kitchen, and a new senior school Library. The former ELC classrooms were renovated into a Music Labs, and the existing Library became a Student Centre.
The addition is filled with natural light; the Dining Hall & Library share views and access into a wintergarden courtyard, while the classrooms have direct access and views to a new naturalized kindergarten play area. The school has LEED Silver certification for the addition. The design incorporated Geothermal heating and cooling, a greywater collection cistern for toilet flushing, drought tolerant landscaping, a sustainable design education program, and light-coloured roofing to reduce the heat island effect.
