The Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (NHC) provides a first-class collegiate hockey experience for athletes and fans at St. Cloud State University as well as an outstanding entertainment venue for performances, concerts and figure skating shows. The expanded Herb Brooks National Hockey Center enhances the event experience, adding amenities that include gathering areas and executive suites filled with Husky tradition. It modernizes the facilities, improving everything from locker rooms to the lofty front atrium. Most of all, the National Hockey Center creates a rewarding collegiate environment for students, student-athletes, thousands of season ticket holders, parents, alumni and friends who ring the ice every Husky Hockey season.
The original facility only met the minimum criteria set for the anticipated needs and requirements for a fledgling hockey program when it was first built in 1989. The hockey center was in need of an addition and renovation due to the team’s increasing success and popularity. These needs included improved branding, updated team locker rooms, new training facilities, new offices, a spacious atrium entrance, and an extension of suites and club level seating, among many other features. Wider concourses were also required to accommodate the enthusiastic crowds that fill the arena for the Husky hockey games. It was important to upgrade technology and amenities to excite players and new recruits as the university continued to build Husky traditions and embrace the atmosphere of Husky Pride.
This project, comprised of two phases, will exhibit a 93,355 gross square foot expansion that will adjoin the south, west and north sides of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The construction was completed in these two phases so that the hockey season would not be interrupted. The south expansion, completed in phase one, features an expansive, four-story glass atrium and ticket lobby that visually engages visitors as they transition through the space into the arena. Throughout the interior spaces, the NHC showcases murals and artwork honoring the former SCSU head coach Herb Brooks, and distinguished student-athlete alumni. The addition also includes offices, grand stairs to the concourse, 14 premium corporate suites, and the Husky Den club room. Overall, seating capacity will be increased by over 900 seats after completion of both phases, and capacity will be increased to over 6,500. West and north expansions will be completed in phase two and will contain additions that include facility and team administration on the upper levels, and a vastly improved press suite. Total renovations of 45,893 gross square feet will include team locker rooms, training areas, concourse areas and toilet rooms. The facility was designed to be concert-ready and is able to accommodate a variety of events ranging from graduation to exhibitions.
The original Hockey Center was constructed in 1989 to serve the Husky men’s hockey team after its acceptance into the NCAA Division I and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Now, more than 270,000 people visit the University each year because of the hockey program and its student-athletes. This can be attributed to exceeding the design goal of providing an event experience that leaves fans and university supporters eager to return.
The Herb Brooks National Hockey Center received $6.5 Million from the 2008 legislature and intends to raise approximately $22.2 million in private funds through the St. Cloud State University Foundation and other private sources to fund the $30 million project. Fundraising events, such as “A Common Goal- Locker Room Campaign” were held to raise $900,000 for improvements to the locker rooms.
The University’s goal was that the hockey center would develop a strong community presence, making it marketable as a regional event center in which the hockey program is a cornerstone of the facility, but not the exclusive face. The hockey center has become an extraordinary new resource and a major destination for entertainment, retail, conventions, and sporting events that showcase St. Cloud and St. Cloud State University throughout the Midwest.
