Located at the heart of Ha Tinh city on a street with many governmental offices, the Coordination Committee SRDP-IWMC Ha Tinh Office is the headquarters of the SRDP (IFAD organization) and IWMC (ODA funded by Belgian government) projects. The total cost is limited and the existing office furniture should be reused as much as possible.
Climate change is a remarkable issue and has comprehensively affected Ha Tinh’s urban and rural areas. Moreover, the rapid urbanization comes at the expense of the rural area. The agricultural land has been reduced, which seriously impacts the lifestyle stability of the local community.
The project’s design concept is a synthesis of sedentary cultivation and settlement aiming for three objectives: iconic imagery, low cost, and quick construction.
The three-story building block is placed in an east-to-west direction. The two upper floors are covered by a lattice structure full of plants and crops, which we call the Vertical Field. The structure, which is comprised of 15-inch-by-15-inch concrete blocks stacked vertically, embraces the entire inside workspace. The irrigation system is integrated in between the blocks’ joints, minimizing the negative impact of the local urban and climatic problems such as noise, air pollution, overheating, and typhoons. At the same time, this agriculture-friendly working environment creates a different experience for the users who can plant vegetables by themselves.
The project is an idea of improving usage of vegetation in urban context while still meeting energy demand in the future. The synthesis of agriculture and architecture is the foundation for sustainable development.
