When Specialized opted to disrupt the bike shop model in Chicago’s retail market, they looked to OKW.
As the first branded store of its kind outside of California, the concept had to not only work architecturally, but function as a community center that could host local events. OKW worked with Specialized to translate their vision into reality, blending the programming requirements of a retail store with the architectural details of hospitality environments.
Not long after the store opened in Lincoln Park, Specialized asked our team to move forward on three additional stores (Austin, Bentonville, and Atlanta). Although all four stores share a similar design language, each is unique in its references to local culture and landmarks. The result is a collection of elegant yet gritty spaces that use light woods and steel to express the beauty and sculpture of their signature product.
