Southwand House is located in Costa Navarino, Messinia, a sustainably driven destination in one of the Mediterranean’s most unspoiled landscapes. Designed as a holiday escape for a Northern European family, it sits within Navarino Dunes, surrounded by olive groves and cypress trees, overlooking the Ionian Sea.
The house thoughtfully integrates the heritage of Messinian stone tower-houses with contemporary architectural expression. Drawing from the local folk architecture of irregular stone volumes, courtyards, and passages, the design employs a system of orthogonal modules framed with stone walls built from locally quarried stone. This deliberate material selection honors the region’s vernacular masonry traditions and allows the structure to blend organically into its natural context.
Stone defines the architectural character –its texture, color, and solidity grounding the building in the terrain. Above these robust stone volumes, white concrete slabs and extensive aluminum glazing introduce lightness and transparency, creating a dynamic interplay between protection and openness, weight and levity.
Organized around a central spine that separates social and private zones, the plan maintains clear visual connections to the sea while establishing a sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces. Each interior area is thoughtfully paired with an outdoor counterpart –courtyards, terraces, and sheltered passages– that extend the experience of living into the landscape.
Southwand House demonstrates how local stone can be used to create resonant, sustainable contemporary architecture that is rooted in place, respectful of tradition, and attuned to modern life.
