South Side Homes are contemporary urban residences that balance striking architectural expression with thoughtful detailing reflective of the city. Just like the Visit Pittsburgh website describes the South Side vibe, these homes are full of character.
The design intent was to create homes rooted in the South Side Flats neighborhood, yet distinct. Two nearly identical side-by-side buildings house three units. One side has 1,600 s.f. with 3 beds/3 bath, a covered deck to the street, and a private back deck. The other side has a lower unit with 2 beds/2.5 baths and an upper unit 1 bed/1.5 both.
Together, the massing, scale, and brick expression perfectly match the street. Yet the design reinterprets that recognizable urban language through updated window compositions and surprising touches, like street-facing Juliet balconies, to create a stronger visual link to the lively, tree-lined street.
The homes are organized vertically, with parking and entry at street level, primary living spaces on the second floor, and bedrooms above. This arrangement gives the common areas an elevated vantage point while preserving privacy and a sense of security. From the interior, the Juliet balconies create an open, urban atmosphere with a romantic European feel.
Inside, the bright, modern living spaces contrast with the more sculptural exterior. Large windows draw in natural light, and decks and roof terraces create multiple opportunities for outdoor living.
Technically, the project required careful structural coordination. Achieving the clean forms and cantilevered elements required precise wood framing and close collaboration during construction.
