At the subtle intersection of authentic Brazilian identity and the light spirit of the French Riviera, a shared atmosphere emerges — one infused with elegance, ease, and a festive, seaside allure. This is the so-called Tropical French Zest, a perception developed by architect Patricia Anastassiadis, head of Anastassiadis Arquitetos, while studying the site. Within this uncommon convergence, she situates the meeting point between Rio’s soul and contemporary French luxury, resulting in the singular identity of Sofitel Ipanema.
The architect and designer begins with local observation to uncover what is unique and translate it into design decisions. In Ipanema, naturalness, luminosity, and a certain holiday-like atmosphere came into focus, subtly connected to the French Riviera. In design terms, refined detailing, artisanal care, and carefully selected materials, along with a strong curatorial approach to art and design, embedded in the DNA of Anastassiadis, capture this essence. Planters assert a tropical presence in the outdoor areas, while the french zest touch unfolds throughout the interiors. “In Ipanema, there is a unique relationship between place and lifestyle. Sofitel begins its return to Brazil through this location. This address is exceptional and has the added fortune of being on a corner, symbolically a place of meaningful encounters,” Patricia notes.
Upon entering, guests are embraced by a lobby that reveals sculptural elements and signature design furniture. Surprises unfold along a fluid path leading to the bar. The ocean view is carefully framed by Anastassiadis’ choices, creating a seamless continuation of the feeling of being at the beach.
In the interiors, custom handles, bespoke lighting, author-designed furniture, and ceramic panels were developed exclusively for the project. “We designed everything, considering every detail — such as the tone of the bed’s headboard, which will be exclusive. This is true luxury. Everything reflects a unique environment that could only exist in this place,” Patricia explains. Natural textures, tactile surfaces of raw stone, wood, and straw, and soft tones reminiscent of sand, sea, and Ipanema’s golden sunset light are ever-present.
On the upper floors, this atmosphere becomes even more special: a gym, spa, and a pool that visually merges with the ocean horizon. A contemplative garden stands out near Club Millésime. The flavors of a Michelin-starred experience, Lasai, led by chef Rafael Costa e Silva, complete the experience alongside nighttime views of the sea and this part of the city. “We reflected on Rafael’s relationship with the land, which guided choices that reveal this atmosphere,” Patricia adds. In the same spirit, the rooftop, with its woven natural fibers, invites touch while expressing a sense of effortless authenticity.
Among these sensations, lightness and authenticity define a Franco-Brazilian art de vivre. “The French Riviera, sophisticated yet sensual, with a certain humor, is where we connect Brazil and France. The French know how to live well, eat well, dress well, enjoy time, and approach life with a natural sensuality — in harmony with the Brazilian way of living,” Patricia observes.
