This mid-century
modern house is located within the Cape Cod National Seashore Park and is sited
on a knoll overlooking two kettle ponds. The 2008 addition by Hammer Architects
includes a master bedroom suite, study, and kitchen on the first floor. A new
roof deck overlooking the ponds is accessed through the second floor home
office. The renovated portion of the residence houses the living/ dining room
and two guest bedrooms.

The
design challenge was to integrate a twenty-first century year round addition
with a mid century modernist “summer cottage”. New windows were carefully
designed to relate to the fenestration and pattern of the existing wing and
provide natural ventilation and views. The materials were selected to blend
into the context and the sunscreen in addition to shading the windows and
providing a covered outdoor dining terrace, knits the entire complex together
as a unified composition.
