New Project was engaged by the artist Virginia Overton to provide art fabrication and installation support services to create a constellation of “gems” for the 4-story western atrium within the new $4 billion Delta Air Lines Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport. The artist conceived of the permanent installation as a series of 12 gems to be suspended across 3 levels of the atrium. Known for her incorporation of salvaged industrial materials into her work, newly fabricated skylight structures were integrated with salvaged and refurbished skylights to create each custom sculptural structure, ranging in size from 80.5” x 40” to 24” x 24.”
Glowing jewels against the backdrop of the city skyline, the work was commissioned by Queens Museum on behalf of Delta Airlines and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as part of LGA's massive transportation infrastructure redevelopment project.
