We were excited to receive the invitation from the traditional Galeria Simões de Assis to design a new space in Curitiba, based on an existing property. From a sustainability perspective, the renovation is the most logical approach in terms of resource utilization, natural resources, and focusing on solutions. We believe that rethinking spaces is and will continue to be an increasingly important exercise for cities.
The ground floor has a high, varied ceiling height. In the mezzanine area at the entrance, the ceiling height exceeds 7 meters, with 4 meters in the rest of the interior space. These dimensions allow for the exhibition of large-scale artworks and installations, expanding the exhibition possibilities for the gallery.
The simple and symmetrical floor plan features two large rooms with great adaptability for exhibition spaces. A counter with a café and a living room along the central axis point to the intentionality of a space for conversations, meetings, absorption, and assimilation. The upper floor is divided between administrative spaces and a large exhibition room next to the mezzanine, which offers the possibility of connecting exhibitions.
The property already had a glass façade, which we chose to maintain largely in order to make the gallery highly visible from the street and create a connection between the works displayed inside and the external context of the street and passersby. Thus, we proposed two interventions to the façade: replacing the door to facilitate logistics during exhibitions and adding a metal skin in front of the glass, made from perforated metal sheets. This new skin provides solar protection for the artworks without losing the transparency of the façade.
In the front setback (the space between the sidewalk and the building), there is a significant elevation change. We sought a landscaping design that imparted unity and continuity to the space, which is originally fragmented by the accesses. We designed a staircase that overcomes the elevation difference and extends along the entire façade, transforming into planters and creating a kind of podium or pedestal for the building itself. We aimed to create a design that balances highlighting the artistic value while bringing it closer to the public who pass by the gallery, providing a transformative, even if brief, moment of contact with the art.
