The “Side x Side Retreat” consists of two neighboring homes that are distinct yet complementary in size and layout. The design strikes a balance between social interaction and privacy, allowing guests to connect when desired while maintaining secluded spaces. Outdoor living is central to both homes, with multiple screened porches, sunrooms, and covered areas oriented toward the lake and natural landscape, creating a seamless indoor/outdoor experience. Thick stone walls anchor each residence, defining formal entryways and gallery spaces while guiding circulation between interior and exterior areas.
The site’s narrow lots required an efficient footprint for both homes, which influenced their long entry galleries and linear layouts. Inspired by historic Southern “shotgun houses,” the two-story homes maximize space while offering interesting interior and exterior zones. Strategic placement of back porches, oriented toward the lake and hillside, emphasizes natural breezes and scenic views, while also enhancing privacy between the homes. The design ensures each home feels connected to the landscape without compromising guest seclusion.
Interior spaces combine thick stone walls with glass walls and operable doors, creating a cozy yet airy atmosphere. Minimalist materials were selected for durability and low maintenance, fitting the homes’ function as weekend retreats. Native limestone, metal panels, stone, and concrete floors provide resilience while maintaining harmony with the surrounding environment. The interiors balance privacy, comfort, and openness, despite the narrow lot constraints and efficient footprint.
The design process began with a deep engagement with the site, observing sunsets, breezes, and wildlife to ensure seamless integration with the natural environment. Each home was designed with an emphasis on efficient space, privacy, and the potential for social interaction between neighbors. The back porch serves as the heart of each home, anchoring the interior/exterior connection and taking full advantage of the adjacent lake and hillside views, resulting in a retreat that is both functional and deeply connected to its surroundings.
