Located along the Galle Face Green promenade near the heart of the Sri Lankan financial and business district, the Shangri-La Colombo is Handel Architects’ new 500 room 5-star hotel, currently under construction. The tower will be the signature building in the country’s first internationally developed mixed-use project, and will stand at 23-stories, atop a 4-story podium. Hotel amenities will include over 48,438 sq. ft. (4,500 SM) of fully equipped function space spread over three floors including a 20,000 sq. ft. (1,800 SM) Grand Ballroom. The hotel also features seven restaurants, a fitness center, spa, pool deck and two outdoor tennis courts.
In addition to designing the Hotel, Handel Architects led the Master Planning for the entire development, which includes 646,000 sq. ft. (60,000 SM) of office space, 603,000 sq. ft. (56,000 SM) of commercial retail space, and a total of 406 residential units in two towers.
The site sits on ten acres of land and features stunning views of the Indian Ocean. The design explores the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces by introducing vertical louvers to create a “transition zone” layer before entering formal spaces. The use of architectural projections with a white finish on the tower facade creates a modern feel, with influences from the local tropical vernacular.
