In Japan, the problem of vacant houses caused by the declining population is becoming more serious, but the housing market is still based on a scrap-and-build system, and the distribution market for used houses is extremely limited. Recently, this issue has been widely discussed in the mass media, and an increasing number of people are considering two options for their new homes: new construction or renovation after purchasing an existing property. On the other hand, there are also a huge number of rented properties for small businesses in Japan. Many of these properties are left vacant after they become old and no one rents them. However, many of the houses built in the mid-Showa period (1960s-1970s) have the potential to be active again with just a little updating, using handmade doors, furniture, hardware, tiles, and other retro-inspired materials. This project is a renovation of an existing property newly purchased by the client for rental. We updated the performance of the facilities, carefully selected which parts of the old finishes to keep and which to replace, and added color and pattern to coordinate the old with the new.
