Studio Fuksas made a significant entrance into the opera world with their stage design for Puccini’s productions, commemorating the centenary of the composer’s death. The set design, characterized by a monochromatic palette, aimed to enhance the visibility of the characters while employing a fractal concept—where the individual parts reflect the whole, akin to the structure of a snowflake. Doriana Fuksas elaborated, stating, “Fractals are fragments that become memories of a world, creating a scene that envelops spectators at Caracalla. We aimed to express the environment through architectural language.”
Massimiliano Fuksas further noted, “Opera is like designing a building... architecture is always scenography; it’s an art of harmony, not war... It’s about elevating materiality.” Their experimental lighting techniques during model testing for *Tosca* and *Turandot* highlighted their innovative approach, seamlessly integrating architectural methodologies with operatic narrative.
