Seoul Memorial Park is an eco-friendly crematorium and park which seamlessly blends in with the natural environment of the surroundings. The interior environment is pleasant and bright, and the piety of a ritual could be expressed by introducing an internal courtyard. Five design concepts, which were integrated into “Ascension to the Heaven”, were set up as follows. First, “Flower Ascension”- a flower was displayed, recollecting the tradition of a flower being laid to the memory of the deceased. Second, “Road Ascension”- the exterior space was planned to represent the harmony with the adjacent Chenggyesan by making various eco-spaces along the road of meditation and remembrance. Third, “Light Ascension”- in the design of the building, a bright pleasant space was imagined by locating the water and sunken space at the courtyard that is open to the natural light and ventilation. Fourth, “Kite Ascension”- a space arranged devoted for the rememberence of the deceased. For this, the pious solemn ritual space will be provided where the sentiment of the traditional funeral procession can be evoked. Fifth, “Spirit Ascension”- for the crematorium, minimizing pollution and energy consumption was intended by suggesting a double casing cinerator system which is and innovative improvement from the yesterday’s cinerator system. Seoul Memorial Park will truly represent an eco-friendly memorial park of the 21st century.
