After most people moved to cities, there are currently less than 100 elderly people living permanently on Chai Shan Island. Based on this, the "Hello Island" international design competition was launched by Zhoushan (city) government. The Seaside Pavilion, as the first-place scheme, forms part of "Hello, Island" prosperity initiative, and hopes to bring some romance to the simple life on the island, and to interpret life and some unpredictable changes in a poetic and realistic way.
The design concept is derived from the typical image of Chinese villages, where an archway at the entrance can be seen from afar, giving a strong sense of arrival. The project is intended to establish a coordinate that can improve the spatial identification of the village. The site selection was finally settled on an abandoned freight dock left over from the 1960s, about 100 meters away from the new ferry terminal. The design firstly repair and reinforce the old pier and add railings. The new base has widened the originally narrow road and enabled it to bear the main structure of 42 meters long, 3 meters wide and 10 meters high.
However, what architects aim to achieve is not merely a static space. The 36 multi-layered, slender blades are hung side by side on the framework and slowly sway with the sea breeze, responding to the natural rhythm and cadence. During the continuous "breathing" process, people are welcomed into a contemplative and interactive space.
This practice conveyed a poetic realism spirit of coexisting with the natural challenges. Due to the presence of wind, waves, high salt content and high temperatures in the island environment, the project's main structure is made of welded steel structure with overall anti-corrosion spraying treatment. The surface fabric of blades adopts stronger fishing ropes, while maintaining an air permeability rate of over 50%, thereby achieving a more significant wind resistance effect. The structure has proven its resilience, safely withstandingmultiple typhoons, including level 12 storms. All the components of each part were prefabricated in the factory near Zhoushan City, then transported to the site by ship at one time.
Since its completion, the structure has become a vital hub for the island’s elderly to gather, rest, and fish, while alsoattracting visitors as a must-see destination. Through its localized, romantic design, it contributes meaningfully to theisland’s revitalization.
