Tamale International Dialysis Hospital
The Tamale International Dialysis Hospital, a groundbreaking healthcare facility designed by Ohene Twum, is the first dialysis hospital serving Ghana's five northern regions. With a 31-bed capacity, the hospital provides a wide range of medical services, including dialysis treatment, maternity care, pediatric care, and general healthcare.
The hospital also prioritizes education and collaboration, featuring teaching rooms for youth medical students and a residence apartment for visiting doctors, fostering a holistic medical ecosystem.
Rooted in the cultural and architectural heritage of Tamale, the design draws inspiration from the region’s natural environment and way of life. The building incorporates rammed earth, brick, and brick lattice patterning, using site-specific natural materials to ensure architectural authenticity and sustainability. This approach not only blends the structure seamlessly into the local context but also celebrates the rich traditions and identity of the area.
At the heart of the design lies a central courtyard, enhancing spatial flow and operational efficiency while creating a communal zone for patients, staff, and visitors. This courtyard embodies the spirit of community and connectivity, central to life in Tamale.
The Tamale International Dialysis Hospital is more than a healthcare facility—it is a symbol of innovation, sustainability, and cultural preservation, redefining medical architecture in northern Ghana.
