Project Context & Intervention
Nestled within a charming block of Vienna’s distinguished 7th district, this project breathes new life into a residential structure originally dating from 1890. The intervention is a sensitive yet assertive rooftop extension, realized through a contemporary lightweight steel construction. This vertical addition introduces three distinct, high-quality residential units—including two maisonettes—each afforded generous private outdoor space via spacious terraces and balconies. Crucially, the integration was managed with minimal disturbance, ensuring access via the retained existing staircase, now modernized with the addition of a new elevator.
Architectural and Tectonic Expression
The design strategy consciously negotiates the relationship between the historic streetscape and the new architectural volume. On the street-facing elevation, the existing cornice has been meticulously preserved, allowing the new sloping roof to seamlessly align with the district’s established roofscape.
This dialogue is most evident at the first roof level, where the staggered cubature introduces a deliberate break or 'setback.' This strategic manoeuvre not only articulates the transition between the 19th-century facade and the contemporary addition but also carves out intimate open-air spaces for the east-facing bedrooms. By contrast, the living areas and open kitchens are oriented toward the courtyard, accessing the principal balconies and roof terraces to maximize daylight and privacy.
Distinctive Features & Amenities
A unique element of the design is the separate 'garden house,' accessible directly from the main terrace. This structure stands as a secluded, private vis-à-vis to the main apartments. Capping the entire intervention, a crowning roof terrace atop the second roof floor delivers a magnificent, sweeping panorama across the rooftops of Vienna—a true architectural highlight.
The material expression of the new levels is defined by a high-quality zinc facade cladding. Its subtle green hue and distinctive diagonal laying pattern establish a strong, sophisticated accent for the entire building. This color concept is rigorously maintained throughout the detailing—from the railings and window profiles to the tile baseboards and custom kitchen fittings—creating a cohesive, signature aesthetic.
Interior Design & Material Palette
The interior concept embraces a sophisticated 'less is more' philosophy, prioritizing material honesty and refined detailing. The chosen material palette includes highly durable, polished screed and naturally oiled wooden floors. Architectural elements such as the custom sheet-steel staircase, floor-to-ceiling flush doors, and integrated built-in furniture cultivate a calm, minimalist ambiance. This deliberate restraint is punctuated by carefully selected colorful accent furniture and the vibrant green kitchenette, injecting moments of warmth and visual interest into the serene spatial sequence. Furthermore, areas defined by the permitted building envelope, often constrained by regulations, were cleverly transformed into functional, cosy retreats through precise, tailored built-in joinery.

The project is underpinned by a commitment to environmental performance. An efficient air-source heat pump system manages the apartments' heating and cooling demands, ensuring an environmentally sound and cost-effective energy supply. Significantly, the intensive green roof and terrace areas function as integral components of the building’s climate strategy. These planted surfaces provide natural climate regulation, simultaneously making an active and measurable contribution to urban biodiversity and the crucial improvement of the immediate urban microclimate.
