The design for Het Sieraad in Amsterdam was a collaboration between IAA Architects and London based office SpaceCraft. Het Sierraad is a community college; a multifunctional heart for the community, where several educational and social activities are brought together under one roof. The complex houses a vocational training college, a musical theatre academy, cafes and restaurants, starting entrepreneurs and artists.
The Sierraad also functions as a community centre for the neighbourhood residents and is now an official Amsterdam wedding location. The combination of adult education and commercial activities under one roof stimulates an optimal integration of education and work.
The striking monumental building is fabulously situated in the up and coming neighbourhood ‘ The Baarsjes’ in Amsterdam. Several past reconstructions and the creation of a gym and canteen in the courtyard, had not improved the design of the beautiful Amsterdam School style building. With strategic interventions in the design and the development of an atrium with a carefully constructed glass roof, we created a functional, transparent and accessible building. We worked in close consultation with the Dutch Heritage organisation and because of its new function; the building serves as a valuable asset to the neighbourhood.
