For Robert Rodriguez’s New York City Showroom, DFA created an architecture centered entirely around the collection. Our studio conceived of a clothing arena. The showroom is a large, white space, and the design allows for the individual pieces to hang around its perimeter, with meeting spaces in the center. The hanging racks are suspended from the ceiling with 1/8th inch cables fastened at five foot intervals, giving the impression that the clothing is floating within the space. The overhead lighting scheme is designed as a mesh of illumination, with recessed beams of light connecting each cable fastening point. The showroom is blanketed entirely in white, save the polished concrete floor, and textures are uniformly matte, creating as little visual ‘noise’ as possible. The wall covering is an opaque, 1/2 inch frosted acrylic, and the furnishings are black. DFORMA designed each piece of furniture custom for Robert Rodriguez, including workstation desks, floor blocks, and showcase and rolling racks.
