Rizal Eco Center
Perched on the northeastern slope of Tayak Hill within the 600-hectare protected forest of Tanaw de Rizal Park, the Rizal Eco Center serves as a welcoming gateway for visitors to one of Laguna’s most significant tourist and pilgrimage destinations. Located 93 kilometers south of Manila and sitting at an elevation of 736 meters above sea level, the site offers sweeping views of the towns of Rizal and San Pablo, Laguna de Bay, Mount Cristobal, and Mount Banahaw. Marking the summit is a 9-meter-tall white concrete cross, a landmark visible throughout the landscape. From this vantage point, visitors can also glimpse the Rizal Eco Center’s distinctive crown-like roof forms and the pathway that winds down the hillside toward its entrance.
The project was initiated through a collaboration between Liter of Light Global Foundation, led by Executive Director Illac Diaz, and the Municipality of Rizal under Mayor Antonino Aurelio. Our firm was commissioned to design the pavilion in celebration of the town’s centennial anniversary and to provide a meaningful destination for the more than 60,000 visitors who make the journey to Tayak Hill each year.
Designed as both a place of refuge and gathering, the Rizal Eco Center offers shelter from the elements while creating opportunities for community events, cultural activities, and social interaction. The pavilion accommodates nature enthusiasts, tourists, and Catholic pilgrims, providing covered and open-air spaces that support a wide range of experiences throughout the year.
As a pioneering municipality in sustainable construction initiatives supported by the foundation, Rizal embraced the use of recycled plastic bottles and bamboo as the project’s primary building materials. The Eco Center incorporates approximately 30,000 recycled plastic bottles, transforming everyday waste into a meaningful architectural resource and demonstrating the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
The design draws inspiration from the site's unique convergence of history, nature, and faith. A series of interlocking pavilion volumes creates a welcoming environment that can be approached from multiple directions, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of its visitors. The interconnected spaces frame views of the surrounding landscape, including the iconic hilltop cross, while encouraging movement, exploration, and interaction. Through its open and inclusive design, the Rizal Eco Center strengthens the connection between people, place, and community, offering a memorable destination within the natural beauty of Tayak Hill.
