Situated in a lava field by the coast of Iceland, Reykjanes Retreat offers a different kind of holiday: a digital detox. Reykjanes Retreat is a place for guests to disconnect, unwind and get in touch with nature. Facing the open Atlantic, the surrounding nature is vast and beautiful, yet harsh.
The retreat is formed as a cluster of domes, with a main house for common activities and sleeping accommodations in private cabins.
A winding road is the beginning of the journey. Upon arrival to the retreat, one enters a foyer with access to a dining hall and lounge, multipurpose hall and music room. From here the journey continues to the outside, where smaller paths lead to cabins scattered around the lava.
The stay offers a balance between common activities and solitude. The cabins are places for rest and reflection, with skylights framing views to the sky and surroundings. Yoga, lectures, dinner and other group activities are offered at the main house as well as hikes in the area. Guests can also use the hot pools nested in the lava in all seasons and weathers.
The facade cladding produces soft reflections, and changes in light conditions affect the buildings’ appearance. The interior design explores creative ways of using local materials such as driftwood, wool and volcanic rock.
The project is commissioned by a local entrepreneur with a vision to create mindful tourism focusing on nature awareness. The retreat will be operated sustainably, minimising waste and energy use. While tourism has become a vital part of Iceland’s economy, the increasing numbers of visitors pose problems for the sensitive nature. Reykjanes Retreat seeks to counterbalance the mass tourism and offer a unique and exclusive experience on the Reykjanes peninsula, safeguarding the economy of the local area, while welcoming visitors in smaller groups.
