An alluring dream condition exists on the windswept outer edges of a Silicon Valley city. Here lies a large tract of underutilized land, comprising one story warehouses, parking lots and the odd single-family house that is long past its prime. In our case it sits at the confluence of almost every major Bay Area and local transit system. While this temptation is mired in complex legal and land acquisition issues a developer client of ours wanted to know..... what if, we designed with big aspirations. A project that would be inspiring, yet lovable, dense but at a humane scale, with a strong vision expressing the future of technology.
Over 80 acres a chain of 5 pearls, accommodates 16 million square feet of development, that increases in intensity culminating in a heroic and grand central plaza, this connects bus, subway, light rail and high speed rail systems. One emerges from this transit collection as a celebration of intentional urbanity. The ground condition is one of four floors of housing, retail, restaurants, and live work. Activated by an expansive covered Farmer's Market / exhibition space, cultural centers, and a significant commitment to maker / artist spaces. In addition, an adjacent indoor arena holds live concerts and professional sports providing powerful civic activation.
With the intention to create a verdant place of natural abundance, the project layers access to roof gardens that embrace the paradox of public and private space, which allows both communities to thrive. There are five vertical layers of landscape interconnecting these five pearls to host a continuous pedestrian experience from grade all the way to the roof.
