A distinctive work by architects Dominykas Kalmatavičius and Gintautas Natkevičius and his studio is emerging on the new architectural map of Vilnius—the "Duonos Kalnas" ensemble of eight individual homes. This is not merely a cluster of residential buildings but a unified architectural composition where every element serves a singular idea: to create a dynamic, sculptural environment harmoniously integrated into the natural terrain.
Architectural Form: A Dynamic Sculpture
The project's core is a bold and expressive volumetric solution. The architectural idea for each building crystallizes into a dynamic D-shaped volume. This form creates a fundamental contrast: one side of the building is monumentally and plastically curved, while the other is strictly flat, opening up its surface to glass and light.
The architectural intrigue does not end there. The second floor is subtly rotated relative to the first, causing the building's silhouette to constantly shift depending on the viewing angle. These are not static objects but kinetic sculptures seemingly frozen in motion. Due to this dynamic form and thoughtful proportions, the buildings, though solid, avoid appearing cumbersome and instead merge organically with the landscape.
Materiality and Texture: A Dialogue of Clinker and Glass
The facade treatment is one of the project's most powerful visual codes. Clinker is the dominant material, but its application is far from standard. The facade's texture is achieved through an original pattern of clinker tiles where every other row is projected forward, creating a deep, vibrant play of light and shadow. This solution imbues the masonry with tactility and visual weight.
The solid, somewhat rugged character of the clinker is contrasted with vast planes of glass. The main glass facade, oriented to the south, dematerializes a portion of the volume and connects the interior with the environment. This contrast between the textured masonry and the light, transparent glass generates an aesthetic tension that emphasizes the qualities of both materials. Dark grey metal elements lend the composition a contemporary and graphic finish.
Space and Light
The architectural form directly shapes the experience of the interior spaces. The open-plan ground floor is oriented toward the largest glass facade, filling it with natural light. The curved wall creates a unique, enveloping space inside, breaking the monotony of a standard rectangular plan.
"Duonos Kalnas" stands as a prime example of mature, conceptual architecture. It is a project where architects demonstrates a masterful command of form, material, and context, creating not just a series of houses, but a cohesive and memorable architectural environment.
