In cooperation with Kurt Hauenschild [tp3] architekten have completely renovated the heritage property "Bäckerhaus” at Hahnengasse 7, Altstadt 5 in the old town of Linz.
With the approval of the Federal Monuments Office a loft conversion has generated space for two additional apartments with roof terraces. The additional roof structure only can be seen from Tummelplatz, whereas it is covered by the existing roof structure and cannot be seen from the place of Altstadt. The spiral staircases to the roof terraces are integral parts of each residency and connect the living with the patio area. Attic windows have been cut into the roof to increase the lighting which now creates an interesting play of light and shadow.
In the first construction phase the cafe "Friedlieb und Töchter" was installed on the ground floor in the premises of the former bakery "Goldmann". In the course of this an old wooden ceiling came to light that has been faithfully restored.
In the second phase of construction six apartments were installed (two on each floor). The former attic was expanded, the grave roof removed and replaced by a lantern. Thus it was possible to bring more light into the building and to create two terraces for the penthouses with stunning views to the Castle of Linz.
In addition, a light shaft has been established stretching from the roof to the first floor in which a huge Foucault pendulum has been installed (Kunst am Bau). This shall remind us that the Earth is in constant motion and change.
