The project is a remodelling and major addition to an existing brick house in Sydney. The design transforms a humble house into a contemporary work of architecture. The decision to keep the existing structure rather than demolishing it and building a new one was based on practical and environmental reasons.
The brief was to create an Australian family home that embraces the outdoors and provides a dynamic yet comfortable environment for a young family. The house is built on the side of a sandstone hill. One challenge of the site was to link a garden at the top of a small cliff to the rest of the side at street level. The design links these by adding an upper level living room and deck that are linked to the lower level by a dramatic double height void. A study room was also removed above the entry which allows a person at the house entry to see up through the house to the upper garden. The sandstone cliff is turned from being a barrier into a feature.
There are a series of clerestory windows that bring light in at different times of the day. Natural Australian materials are used including spotted gum cladding and ironbark flooring. These hardwoods are highly durable and beautiful. The wood is contrasted with white render outside and plasterboard inside. The stair and balustrade details are unique and sculptural while being cost effective. The upper level strategically frames view to nature while screening the suburban backdrop. Handmade pendant lights from India and a rust covered fireplace add texture and warmth to the otherwise restrained and contemporary building forms.
