With the urgent need for the removal of the existing unauthorized structures, the design scheme proposes the creation of a unified structure which will consist of units with common typological characteristics, forming a cohesive, aesthetically and functionally, zone of semi-open-air and open-air spaces along the waterfront pier at the entrance of the port of Rafina.
The new structure will be deployed parallel to the existing building complex, allowing it to be perceived again as a single elongated entity. It will be a white lightweight metal construction with nautical references, functioning as a "transparent" portico in front of the existing building complex. Each portico unit will be adjustable, from fully open to fully closed, depending on weather conditions, through a system of rotating metal louvers, retractable glass panels and telescopic sliding frames.
The area currently used for vehicle parking will be transformed into a space for restaurant outdoor seating with a flexible shading arrangement, composed from white tensile fabric sunshades on fine white pillars, referencing the sails and masts of sailing boats.
Along the pedestrian sidewalk, greenery and seating areas will be introduced. The trees planted in this zone will create a pleasant microclimate along the sidewalk during the summer months. At the same time, they will provide shade for the outdoor seating areas, while in winter, as they shed their foliage, they will allow the winter sun to enter the restaurant spaces - thus, the planting scheme will function bioclimatically in relation to the shopfronts.
