Radisson Blu Minneapolis just opened as the fourth property for the upscale European lifestyle brand in the United States. The architecture and design firm, Stonehill and Taylor, in collaboration with interior design consultant Graven Images of Scotland, created a unique design concept that would distinguish it as a standout hotel in downtown Minneapolis.
The reception lobby invites guests into the hotel with a dramatic arrival experience. Walking through the glass entrance, an expansive wall featuring custom video art shot in and about the city of Minneapolis is the focal point of the space. A giant domed pendant fixture hangs from the 16-story-tall atrium while a wine cellar flanks an entire wall. The lobby was rethought as a series of gathering spaces that flow into each other, with large seating elements that comfortably accommodate groups of visitors. Scandinavian influences can be seen in the choice of furniture pieces that celebrate midcentury styles from the region.
The FireLake Grill House and Cocktail Bar was planned to be a lively, casual, and social environment through its open plan. The restaurant has a welcoming rustic look inspired by Minnesotan landscape and industries, with details in copper, steel, and rough finishes. The wood that clads the majority of walls, columns, beams, and ceilings in the restaurant was reclaimed from old barns throughout Minnesota, then cut and dressed into very straight planks.
Guestrooms feature an overarching palette of neutral and relaxing tones. The sleek and monochromatic design is disrupted by colorful art pieces on the walls. Case goods in soft gray wood finish are connected to give them a “built-in” feel. Guest bathrooms have been updated with glass enclosure showers, new fixtures, and larger vanities. One large wall features wallpaper with playful doodles that bring a rich texture into an otherwise serene and simple design.
