We believe that a good design is not just beautiful and functional but must be a catalyst for sustainability and innovation. Project 104 / Casa PSCL embodies all these criteria; at the same time helps in the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in many ways moving forward to a better future. The use of tactile materials like concrete, timber, glass, and steel not just decoratively for the house, but as structural elements, cleverly working together as a whole to make the building safe, beautiful and grand. The owner once told me that a strange young boy from the neighborhood came up to him and said “I like your house, it looks beautiful and high tech!” To us at that point we realized we’ve done a building that’s having an impact into the community even serving as an inspiration to the younger generation. The stunning and warm inviting architecture of the house serves as a medium to promote “quality” family time.
The large doors and windows were conceived to bring outside nature into the house thus adding to the benefitial conditions and enrichment of the spirits of the users.
Being green and passive were the practical and useful characters of the structure, pocket gardens distributed around the house brings out the green thumb mindfulness of the owners especially during lockdowns and covid19 pandemic quarantine periods. It helped them eased their minds from boredome. Carefully laid out rooms and light filled spaces, pool and gym areas added to the soothing comfort and overall positive health advantages for the users.
The lower ground being tucked into the adobe soil continuously provide thermal comfort all throughout the year. The average temperature is the same because the adobe soil is like an insulation for the structural walls. The earth and sub terrain structure reduces the noise pollution while providing security and privacy. Cooking in the kitchen is more exciting and fun because you can see and hear the infinity pool water trickling down when you open the large sliding glass doors.
The four car garage can also be converted as an additional gathering space for relatives and friends above it is a roof garden now being used as a golf putting green. These flexibility of areas gives changeable character of the building leaving the users multiple configuration ideas.
The shape of the house draws attention from any angle, there’s an interplay between light and shadow around the facade at any time during the day and as a result the juxtaposition between spaces are revealed. The striking entrance area elegantly opens into an entirely different living space, the house has an unconventional form that one can presumably consider that the functions led to the abstract arrangement but in fact, going along with nature was a huge contributing factor, and it works. The lower ground level is where the action is, services like the kitchen, living, pool, garage, entertainment, operates flawlessly for the whole house. The upper level is semi-private, where we can see the gym pod, cinema and other sleeping quarters. Perched high above the ground are the third and fourth levels that brings new vantage points with extraordinary views and beyond the trees, that’s why, relaxing spaces that needs peace and quiet like masters bedroom, kids bedroom, family area, hobby rooms and soho (home office) were all positioned up there. The sloping twin roofs were designed with slant angles and huge over hangs not just to protect the building from too much heat and rain but to give the rooms above, good views of the outside. All rooms were given access to the outdoors and are ventilated naturally with the help of the four-level courtyard and pocket gardens. Multi-functional areas were included so the owners can make changes in some rooms whenever they need to. When you look at the house from every corner it always brings a lot of talking points, positive views from visiting families, friends including neighbors. The house encouraged positivity, it explored new ideas, and environment mindfulness for people who were able to come across it.
