This 19,000-square-foot project restored and repurposed a campus landmark, companioning it with a decidedly contemporary new structure. Clad in stucco, cast stone, and zinc-coated copper, the restored house, a former club, accommodates the university’s community tutorial program, library, resource center, seminar and program rooms, café, and offices.

The addition is sheathed in a larger-scale cast stone, a glass-and-metal curtain wall system, and deep overhangs that recall the adjacent re-constructed roof. Active day and night, this wing offers a new entry to a lawn and terrace, a catering kitchen, and an auditorium designed for music, lectures, conferences, and special events. The composition of the two volumes, set in a new landscape, create distinction and integration of historic and new.

The Fields Center was honored with design awards from AIA New England, AIA New Jersey, and the Boston Society of Architects.
