The new facility designed by LEA Architects, LLC which consists of Mesa Fire Station No. 215 and an Airport Police Unit was a replacement station for the existing Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Facility (ARFF) that was built when the airport was a military installation (Williams Air Force Base) in the 1950’s. The existing ARFF was originally to be demolished and the new 26,000 SF facility was to be constructed on the same site but due to the growth of the Airport and the need for additional terminal parking the project site was relocated to another site closer to the airport control tower and runway centerline. The new site allowed for terminal expansion and additional passenger parking on the existing fire station site. While this site relocation caused some time delay due to site re-design, the project team worked closely together to keep the project moving. The new site-adapted design ultimately saved costs that would have been required to remodel the existing adjacent facility to act as a temporary fire station while the new facility was being constructed. LEA-Architects, Mesa Engineering and Mesa Fire Department met regularly along with the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority Officials to evaluate schedules for construction of a new aircraft holding area being constructed adjacent to the project site and taxiway improvements that the ARFF vehicle drives would tie into.
