Place du 30 Juin in Kinshasa city center is one of the most visited public space in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This project is a proposal to the provincial government as a scheme to popularize the space by turning it into a more humane and welcoming place given its tropical context.
This proposal by EbenezerStudio aims to improve the Place du 30 Juin with important interventions.
■ More green spaces introduced to the oasis in the middle of the concrete
■ Movement is created with circulation for exploration
■ Shaded urban furniture to welcome more visitors
■ Solar-powered shaded seating equipped with electrical outlets for cell phones to create modern interactivity between the place and the people and attract visitors
■ A fish pond is installed between the lion fountain and the former Leopold II stone twin towers
■ Zebra lined speed bumps introduced where the Place’s circulation meet the adjacent roads for safe crossing.
Urban design, or the art of building cities, is the method by which man creates a built environment that fulfils his aspirations and represents his values (Rapoport, 1969).
As we migrate from rurality to urbanity, we can create liveable spaces that reflect us. The evolution of spatial and historical relationships creating something unique. The lack of underlying logic or rationality in the creation of these spaces requires us to add our culture in the toolkit so we can turn back to the ancestral art of place making.
