Illuminating Benevolence is a lantern-like sculpture expressing America’s good will at work through the Peace Corps. The commemorative is made up of hundreds of glass tubes representing the importance of each individual to contribute to peace. During the day, each glass tube funnels daylight from an oculus above, in the evening, concealed LED lights illuminate the shafts from below making the commemorative a physical representation of a shining hope for peace. Each side of the triangular shaped lantern represents the goals of the Peace Corp: training, understanding of America and understanding of others by Americans. The triangular glowing lantern along Louisiana Avenue recalls America’s gift in the world…benevolence and opportunity.
