A two-staged project for Pathways, early Childhood intervention PL that began with the boundary integration and accessibility upgrade of a neighbouring house and then moved into a major addition and upgrade to the existing childcare centre fronting Jarvie Park.
Brightly coloured reveals at the ground floor emphasise the entry of the centre in a playful way. A rudimentary ‘house’ outline provides a recognisable figure for visiting children at an appropriate scale. In the apex above the entry sits a triangular board room window. This visual link connects the management of the centre with day to day people movements.
The entry space is clean-lined and has clear sight-lines to the park, entry gate and vestibule.
A contorted reception desk offers an interface for someone in a wheelchair and hides computer and telephone clutter behind a screen.
Much of an original building was retained and adapted including two playrooms and associated service spaces. New joinery and floor finishes integrate the existing spaces with the new work.
A new sensory therapy room with padded rubber floor and high-load ceiling fixings has a break-out space onto Jarvie Park. This specialised room provides a flexible space for various kinetic activities.
