Park Property Management, which manages residential rental accommodations across southern Ontario, needed to create a new regional office in midtown Toronto. By looking past the chaos of an unloved, seemingly pint-sized space crammed with old refrigerators, stoves, gym equipment, scraps of wood and power tools, Quadrangle released the potential of the 2,000 square feet by unearthing existing modernist features. The ensuing design kept certain features of the existing space – the folded concrete roof structure and original terrazzo flooring – while repairing and repurposing others, specifically the original light fixtures, to create a design that re-imagined the mid-century romance of the workplace. Vintage colours, wall coverings and era-appropriate furnishings, such as walnut veneer cabinets and satin bronze finish plumbing fixtures, were complemented by a black and gold custom micro-print wallpaper, developed by Quadrangle’s talented interiors group and derived from Park Property’s logo. The tone of the space is set as soon as you move from the cozy elevator lobby into a light-filled, high-ceilinged living room that is decorated with pinball machine artwork by one of the company owners. Glamour, comfort and a classic quality are found in abundance for the company’s 10 employees.
