This project took shape in 2017 from a study conducted by Professor Marco Nieri in the Val dei Carpini forest in Fai della Paganella, in Trentino.
The research measured the leaf biomass of the local beech forest and revealed a significant emission of monoterpenes, which are volatile compounds found in essential oils. When inhaled in sufficient quantities and for an adequate duration of time, these substances can provide us with measurable health benefits.
Inspired by these findings, the concept of the "Parco del Respiro", or Breathing Park, was developed. Existing forest trails were incorporated into the design, with several rest areas identified to encourage a direct connection with nature. All these spaces are unified by a consistent architectural language, where materials and colours are deliberately repeated to enhance identity and recognizability.
The park’s signature colour, a soft blue metal, stands in contrast to the surrounding green forest tones, symbolizing the sky, a presence often obscured by the tree canopy. Natural larch wood was selected for its aging qualities, which gradually transitions to a silver-grey patina over time.
The project design revolves around three main features: the entrance portal, the forest embrace, and the bioenergetic beech tree.
Portale d'Ingresso: marks the access point to the park, acting as a threshold that delineates the entry.
Abbracciami: A cantilevered platform connects the path to a tree, allowing people to engage physically with the tree through an embrace.
Il faggio magico: Encourages relaxation and "Bioenergetic Landscapes” techniques. Visitors can lie in a large hammock that envelops the bioenergetic beech tree.
