The Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and The Ohio State University’s Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) joined forces to renovate a portion of Goss Laboratory. The Cancer Center has research and office needs. It is committed to partnering with surrounding Colleges to increase the utilization of existing space before expanding the Cancer Center’s footprint beyond the campus boundaries. Such a strategy contributes to the environmental and financial health of the University.
The new design takes a long view of the changing needs of research and strives to deliver a flexible environment that is highly efficient and accommodating for the research needs of OSUCCC and the future needs of CVM. The changing nature of cancer research demands a flexible environment to meet the needs of newly recruited principal investigators while minimizing the need to renovate space with each new research professional hired in the future. A majority of the casework is movable with an infrastructure with enough range to accommodate the personal preferences of each investigator. The design shifts away from sterile research environments to support the recruitment effort, incorporating color, branding, collaboration, and transparency.
Lab benches are organized so that a research team can flex between one aisle and many as funding levels and research theories demand. Collaboration zones, marked with color and pattern, and equipment rooms round out the shared work environment.
