The Orokawa Family Center at the Towson Y was designed to foster the non-profit Y of Central Maryland's goal of creating an active, accessible and healthy community center incorporating physical activity with spiritual health. The entry to this
fitness and aquatics center takes you into an open-plan lobby flanked by three core program components; the pool complex, the gymnasium and the fitness areas. From the Lobby and family lounge area, any number of activities can be viewed: the rock climbing wall, a swim meet at the lap pool and children playing in the fun pool or in the Stay-n-Play Room adjacent to the Lobby. Other program elements include multi-purpose rooms, an aerobics studio, cycling room, sauna and family lounge area complete with a fireplace and hearth.
The building exterior is designed to create an inviting community place. The fitness area, gymnasium and pool complex are separate blocks with gabled roofs that are linked by the fl at-roofed lobby/lounge area that looks out over the entrance. The facility is designed to meet the USGBC’s LEED Silver certification, including an enhanced energy and heat recovery system, healthy indoor air quality, advanced insulation, highlyreflective (SRI) roofing, Energy Star ® fixtures, and no-chlorine pool water treatment system.
