One of 100 Villas designed by 100 architects from around the globe, selected by Herzog & DeMeuron. The design of Villa 043 responds to the predicament of its situation: being very prominently sited at the entrance to the development, next to large public programs of the concert hall and club house, while offering views outward to the distant landscape beyond. Thus the design is treated as a hybrid of inward and outward focusing spatial paradigms, driven by a reciprocity between figures of negative space and building mass. Villa 043's construction system expands on the concrete frame and brick infill, with a corbelled brick skin that adapts to its subtly twisting form. A double helix of vertical circulation of intertwining interior and exterior stairs wraps the villa's central courtyard space. The 100m2 villa's main living spaces wrap around the south-facing outdoor terrace which extends out from and is fed by this central circulation core.
