In the heart of the Elefsina waterfront, an emblematic building - a remnant of the city's industrial history - is being transformed into a contemporary cultural space. The listed two-story building, prominently located on Kanellopoulou street, used to house the offices of the old industrial complex of Eleourgiki, and will be redefined as a multifunctional cultural hub, contributing to the promotion of the industrial heritage and the cultural revitalization of the area. The intervention is part of the broader strategic plan of the Municipality of Elefsina for the sustainable development of the city, which includes the upgrading of the coastal front and its transformation into a cultural zone - within the context of Elefsina European Capital of Culture 2023.
The elongated rectangular detached two-story 352.00 sq.m. building with a four-sloped roof is divided into two parts by a central impressive covered 4-meters high atrium, where one enters the building. The new interior layout will form a multi-purpose cultural space: exhibition halls, presentation areas, library, workstations and administrative offices. All of these are organized around the central atrium, which functions as a through axis of horizontal and vertical movement, creating a living heart within the building.
The main requirements for the new functionality of the building are the connection of the two parts of the building, which are separated by the atrium, and the addition of an elevator. The connection of the two parts of the building is achieved through a metal and glass bridge/corridor on the first floor. A metal and glass elevator is placed next to the existing concrete staircase. The atrium is enclosed by a curtain wall on the south and north facades of the building. The design of the curtain wall emphasizes verticality and this gives a more significant scale to the two facades.
The architectural proposal seeks to respect and highlight the simple, almost Doric, character of the original shell. All morphological elements will be restored to their original form and materiality, respecting the industrial heritage. At the same time, the new architectural elements – such as the passerelle, the elevator and the curtain wall of the atrium – stand out through their materiality as new inserts in the existing structure and are integrated in a subtle way, signaling the new use without affecting the historical footprint of the building.
The proposal, with sensitivity towards the memory of the place, comes to restore the continuity of the city with its past and to offer residents and visitors a new cultural space. In a city where industrial memory meets the eternal glow of the ancient myth, this particular building is reintroduced to the public as a symbol of metamorphose and creative reuse.
