The waiting area of the ÖBB railway station in St. Johann in Tyrol was redesigned and completed in December 2019. The forecourt was constructed to become easily accessible by a ramp and it was supplemented by a new canopy cover.
Natural materials and warm colors create a pleasant and inviting atmosphere. In addition, the mix of a cold stone floor combined with a warm oak panelling and a dark ceiling generate a dignified and distinguished mood. A rhytmic interplay is formed by the grouped arrangement of geometrical forms.
The entrance hall has a uniform appearance. The essential infrastructure elements, as a ticket machine a snack bar and a monitor are arranged along the main axis between the forecourt and the railway platform. The axis is highlighted by a spotlight rail. On the opposite side, an open waiting area with modular seating possibilities and a ski stand have been situated besides the access to a separate waiting room. The waiting room is creating a homely mood, by acoustically effective ceiling panels and a closed ceiling design.
Hans Chrtistian Andersen's quote "To travel is to live" evokes associations with travelling and the railroad.
