The objective of the project was to create a new mix use development on the Pacific Oceanfront of Mazatlan, Sinaloa Mexico. The project is located between the old downtown and the new neighborhood Cerritos, in front of the most important public space in the city, the famous boardwalk, which connects both sides of the city and where people not only commute, but gather to celebrate different kind of public events during the year and enjoy sitting down to watch the sunsets on the ocean horizon.
The main challenge of the project was how to compete with all new residential projects that are been developed in Cerritos neighborhood which offer not only ocean views but also private beach experience. Our conclusion was not to... Most of all mix use developments in Mexico are closed gate developments isolated to the public with no urban integration and nothing happening at the street level but only big parking podiums and some kind of retail but without focusing on user experience. We thought that since our project is located in a more urban context, but at the same time offers oceanfront views, we could create a connection between the private and public space of the city, a new space which potencialize the project but at the same time give something back to the city, a new kind of urban social public space .
Our project proposes a new park and plaza , a gift to the city and its inhabitants at the base of the towers. by virtually integrating the boardwalk into the land, we created a curve that opens the space and invites people in, creating a new experience for the retail and restaurants at the base level of the project with big terraces and gardens with trees and fountains that offers shade and fresh air to the visitors and residents, connecting the interior with the exterior and incredible views to the ocean. We were able to solve this by proposing two robotic parking systems at the rear part of the base of towers where views are less attractive and covering them with green vertical gardens to create nice views for the neighbours. This public space is repeated in higher levels at the sky lobbies of the office and hotel components in both towers allowing visitors to enjoy the views.
The curve also gives shape to the towers that grow almost 100 meters above ground and set back on the top outer corners allowing views and sunlight to the neighbors. All levels of the towers offer big terraces to protect the interior space from the intense heat and sun radiation but at the same time allows floor to ceiling windows and sliding doors to maximize views and allow fresh air coming in. The unique form of the towers helps dissipate the strong hurricane winds coming from the south creating a unique shape on the skyline of the city looking different but only because it performs differently.
