Nyt Hospital Hvidovre is a 30,000-square-metre extension of Hvidovre Hospital, situated west of the existing hospital complex. The four-storey hospital extension comprises an emergency ward, a pediatrics ward as well as obstetrics and cardiology departments.
The project respects and continues the original building principles of Hvidovre Hospital, allowing the new structure to adapt naturally to its context.
The architectural idea is to develop the concrete base into a flexible and respectful new interpretation while maintaining the orthogonal geometry. The overall impression becomes a flexible, efficient, and expressive building complex, which is also robust in relation to future changes.
On top of the concrete base, the bed sections are placed as a sculptural structure, meandering around the new green garden spaces. The bed wards are individually sized according to the needs of the respective ward which they serve, while at the same time constituting a single sculptural composition. The structure allows for quick access between the respective wards.
A distinctive feature of the project is the new arrival platform, which angles gently toward the hospital and leads below the building, where green garden spaces bring daylight down to the parking level. These gardens also serve as intuitive wayfinding elements and welcoming reception areas for the new main entrance and emergency ward. By integrating functional efficiency with architectural expression, Nyt Hospital Hvidovre sets a benchmark for patient-centered healthcare design – creating a resilient environment that honors context while preparing for future demands.
