Spacesmith was enlisted by Hudson Meridian Construction Group and the NYC Economic Development Corporation to design the New York Police Department’s Auto Pound at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The project entailed design of a 10,000 sf building that houses the NYPD Auto Pound Offices, including a public redemption area, open plan workstations, enclosed offices, locker room, stress reduction room and archive area. The facility also has a large canopy that shields inspection stations from inclement weather.
The scope of work included coordination with civil engineers for the layout of the grounds around the compound. The facility is located within a fenced and secure property on the edge of the Airport. The site area comprises approximately 550,800 sf or 12.64 acres containing long term storage for 3,500-4,000 vehicles impounded by the NYPD for forfeiture, drunk-driving arrests and evidence gathering procedures.
The building is fitted with an aluminum composite panel cladding system, low-e glazing, PVC roof membrane and utilizes a geothermal heat pump system, energy recovery units, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and energy efficient lighting fixtures. This building is LEED Silver certified.
