The EGGNissan Design, Farmington Hills viewing
courtyard. The 15,000square foot, egg shaped volume celebrates the spirit of the
automobile; its movement and speed. This
enclosure is situated directly adjacent to, and in full view of the automotive design
studio. The walls of the "egg" rise to 30 feet and spiral outward,
slightly overlapping. The image is one of an inverted whirling dervish reaching
for the sky in an outward infinite form. Two layers of perforated metal “skin” clad the steel structure. The
resulting moiré effect changes day to night / summer to winter. From ground
level to 12 feet, a translucent layer between the metal skins allows for light
diffusion without compromise to required security. The “egg” is both a protective, secured wall
and a light filled veil. The precise
engineering required to execute the form of an automobile is unprecedented in
the design discipline. The architects
have ventured to design a structure that is a richly articulated container for
creative spirit.
