THE MAIN REFERENCES OF THE PROJECT ARE THE URBAN AND HISTORICAL HERITAGE OF THE CITY WITH ITS INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE AND THE PECULIARITY OF THE SITE WITH THE PRESENCE OF THE TRAIN LINES AND THE STEAL BRIDGES.
THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO MAKE AN ICONIC BUILDING, A STEAL LANDMARK THAT CAN EXPRESS THE ESSENCE OF NEWARK AND CELEBRATE HIS IDENTITY.
THE USE OF “IRON” IN THE PROJECT SYMBOLIZES THE TRADITIONAL CHARACTER OF NEWARK. THE EXPRESSIVITY OF THIS MATERIAL, BESIDES EXTABLISHING A DIALOG OF BALANCE WITH THE SURROUNDING, WANTS TO INTERPRET THE SPIRIT OF THE CITY.THE CITY. PENN STATION, IRONBOUND, THE RIVER
THE NEWARK VISITOR CENTER, LOCATED NEXT TO THE RIVER AND THE PENN STATION, WILL PLAY THE ROLE OF A HINGE CONNECTING THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT, THE IRONBOUND DISTRICT AND THE NORTH AREA.PENN STATION AND THE IRONBOUND STREET GRID
THE BUILDING IS MADE BY PARALLEL STEAL WALLS POSITIONED TO A DIFFERENT DISTANCE ACCORDING TO THE DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS OF THE PROGRAM (AUDITORIUM, CAFÉ, GALLERY, OFFICE, ETC…).
THE ORIENTATION OF THE STEAL WALLS FOLLOWS THE DIRECTION OF THE RAIL LINES AND THE IRONBOUND STREETS GRID.VISUAL AND PHYSICAL PERMEABILITY
THE GLASS FACADE GIVES VISUAL PERMEABILITY TO THE BUILDING.
PEOPLE WALKING ON THE STREET CAN FEEL THE PRESENCE OF THE PARK AND THE RIVER, LOOKING THROUGH THE BUILDING. FREE PEDESTRIAN WAYS CROSS THE BUILDING AND ALLOW THE PEOPLE TO REACH THE PARK. GREEN PATIOS, DISTRIBUTED ALONG THE BUILDING, MAKE THE INTERIOR LANDSCAPE MORE HETEROGENEOUS AND STRENGTH THE DIALOG BETWEEN THE BUILDING AND THE PARK.
