A showcase for wood construction on the Seine waterfront north of Paris, this office building is an example of what can be achieved when technical innovation is deployed in the service of sustainable, energy-efficient, materially sensitive design.
The post and beam structure in glued laminated timber offers great resistance to vertical loads, while the CLT floors, made from crossed layers of solid wood, provide stability and excellent thermal insulation. The combination of these two structural elements with the lightweight prefabricated wooden frame facades allows for rapid, efficient, and high-quality construction. The curved roof was a technical challenge for the team. Its resolution distinguishes the building with a distinctive exterior form and unique vaulted workspaces at the summit of the building.
The south facade, facing the Seine, is entirely glazed providing an important source of natural light that is controlled through a series of staggered green terraces, as well as sunscreens and photovoltaic panels. These panels protect the façade, while also providing electrical production for the building’s consumption. The sunlight catches the interior wood finishes and casts a natural glow.
Each office floor is punctuated by a variety of outdoor spaces, terraces, and loggias. The H-shaped geometry guarantees direct access to natural light for all workspaces, and provides a flexible floorplan, capable of being occupied by multiple users.
