New international sail & dive sport city Muscat, Oman

The "New international sail & dive sport city Muscat, Oman" is a project to develop a location for professional marketing and demonstration of the Sultanate of Oman and its sailing tradition linked to an international infrastructure with focusing on microclimatic improvement.MotiveThe design is to be made for a bay 15km southeast from the capital city Muscat. The existing function of diving school and leisure area must be kept in the design concept an be enhanced by infrastructure. The special ambition is the implementation of international meeting and cultural exchange.PlaceThe shallow water bay has connection to the arabian sea. The planning area is about 700 metres long and 300 metres wide. The tides of 1.5 metres change the different beaches and boat piers every 6 hours.The average temperature is in winter around 20° in summer 37°. The land side of the area is occupied by the "Oman Dive Center", an international known diving school, easterly the 5 star hotel "Shangri- La" finishes it towards the open sea. Currently the bay is exclusively in touristic use but without infrastructure or permanent habitation. The environs is mountainous with heights up to 200m above sea level from the north eastern Batinah range.ProgrammThe background for the design is based on a cultural and political analysis of the Oman in regional , supraregional and global context.With the 5 year plans by Sultan Quabos new sources of income besides oil and farming shall be developed. The actual 5 year plan focuses the opening of the sultanate.To show the world the dynamic culture is one of the main feature the development of tourism. A lot of places along the coast line are occupied by high class touristic facilities.The sultanate shall assert itself in the global tourism. To support this the project Omansail was founded by the new Ministry of TourismOmansail is described with the following key words... project for opening the Oman...i nspiration for a new generation... compeeting at international level... sharing the secret of Oman to do business... long term project... attraction for inward investment... rebranding of omanOmansail has not just the aim to give an old tradition to a new generation but to trade the brand Oman to the world.“Not the fossil, closed desert between the pompous, superficial Dubai and Yemen but a complex land with cultural background and history shall be brought to the world.”So it is commanded that all touristic Projects must be brought in line with nature and culture.The participation in international sail events like the Americas Cup with a fleet of sailing boats, catamarans and trimarans are fixed points in the Oman Sails project focus.The today international known crew has reached a level of famous sports men and represents the sailing sport as a cultural national sport for every generation.The whole organisation of Omansail is splitted in the whole Sultanate. There is no headquarter that can bundle all interests in one place.At the moment the planning area is occupied by a touristic institution; the Oman Dive Centre.Founded by two expatriates the Oman Dive Center has made its international name ind the bay Bar Al Jissah. The complex under water world and the convenient water temperatures label the dive region around Muscat. In combination with the Omansail Project and further cultural installations like a sailing museum in Sur the bay Bar Al Jissah shall be transformed into a new tourisitc location that is influenced by sport and culture.A place for international intercommunication under the hand of a sport ardent nation.The intention of the programm is the encouragement to strenghten the touristic sector of Oman . Cultural benefits must be kept, modern standards must be introduced.
