Urban Design Group transformed 1901 Light Street, a once-abandoned 19th-century industrial complex in South Baltimore, into a vibrant residential community that seamlessly blends history and modern living. The 1.7-acre site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, comprises five interconnected Gothic Revival and Late Victorian structures that were carefully restored in collaboration with CHAP and the National Park Service. The adaptive reuse introduced 135 unique residential units with a mix of multi-level and single-level layouts, along with thoughtfully integrated amenity spaces that foster community within the historic framework. By preserving intricate architectural details and repurposing original materials, the project revived the craftsmanship of the 1880s factory while contributing to the ongoing revitalization of South Baltimore’s urban fabric.
