Nantian Temple is located in the subtropical marine monsoon climate zone with abundant precipitation. The air with high humidity and leakage on the roof of the construction accelerated the decay of the wooden components, which contributed to a certain degree of damage to the walls and other parts. At the same time, since the structure had been existing for decades, human-caused damages and lack of routine maintenance, the damage has even spread from the wooden structure and walls to finishings on the surface. In 2017, The design of conservation and restoration of Nantian Temple was entrusted by the Jinjiang City’s Cultural Relics Conservation Centre to the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University (THAD)’s team. In August 2019, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage approved the plan of the design. The conservation project was undertaken by Quanzhou Erythrina ancient construction engineering Co.,Ltd. and broke ground in May 2021. All works were completed in the summer of 2022 and Nantian Temple was given back to the local community. This project was announced to be awarded the Award of Merit of the 2022 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in November 2022.
